HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH

//HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH

Here is a short note on how to improve your English.

The English language is beautiful. It is the world’s lingua franca, which has been noted as one of the hard languages to learn in the world because of its grammar and spelling. If you intend to converse in English, it is advisable to improve your grammar, whether in spoken or written form.

I once heard the story of a young man who told his lady interest lovingly that he thought she was ‘hideous’ and that was the last time she spoke to him. He thought the word ‘hideous’ meant secretive; the story sounds funny but quite embarrassing.

I can bet that many of us have been or are still guilty of word misuse; I don’t think most of us have grown above making silly grammatical errors; it does happen to almost everyone. It can be funny how in this part of the world, we are quick to remind others that the English language is not our mother tongue, just so that they won’t hold grammatical errors over our heads.

Failing in lexis (vocabulary) and structure may not be avoidable at some point, but with consistent learning and practice, you will become better at it.

Worthy of note, here are some ways to improve your English grammar

Practice these four-core skills; Reading, listening, writing, speaking, and actively take note of new words.

  • Read everything you can lay your hands on from novels, newspapers, blogs, magazines, etc.
  • Listening is the core of good communication; learn to listen to educative and informative programs on television and radio, podcasts, etc.
  • When you take note of new words, check the dictionary, or google the words to learn the meaning, check for synonyms and antonyms of the words. Check the context in which it was or can be employed. Construct a sentence in spoken and written form, and practice using the expression were necessary during conversations with people, and you can also practice having a mirror conversation.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; be humble to learn from them, and practice because it brings perfection.
