Mathematics-Week
Mathematics Week
As an educational consulting firm we also organize MATHS WEEK. This mathematics week is been organized once a year in which we invite professional mathematics teachers from universities and colleges who are well trained in educating students on mathematics. The objectives of the MATHS WEEK are to present facts about the applications of mathematics in various disciplines such as engineering, sciences, finance, banking etc.; also presentation of Maths Tricks and MATHEMAGICS which stimulates the student’s interest in learning Mathematics is part of the activities of the MATHS WEEK. We also encourage students through this conference to carry out research on how to solve mathematical problems. To carry out such a programme it is the duty of the school administration to fund the payment of the teachers invited and also in organizing the programme.
Some of the benefits of organizing this MATHS WEEK event are that, it helps the students to;
- Sharpen their mind-set on the subject
- Experience different lessons away from their usual subject teacher
- It exposes them to the use of new tools and tricks in solving mathematics
- Give them the advantage of learning in the same environment but with a different setting, breaking them from their classroom which is their comfort zone.
- Expose them to new tips and tactics on mathematics
- Increases and gives them greater focus on the subject.
MATHEMATICS CLINIC
As part of our consultation we also help schools in setting up Mathematics Clinic to help students who have problems in solving mathematics that they can’t solve in their classes. At Academic Temple we identified lack of multiple and logical intelligence as a major reason for failure in mathematics.Though this deficiency is natural in some pupils not all, so we believe with time and proper intellectual training, students can get over them with special attention from the clinic.
We have various types of intelligence – verbal and logical. Most students have verbal intelligence. They can talk well but when it comes to logical intelligence, not all of them are endowed. So from this clinic we develop this multiple intelligence in each child because they would be taught with laptops, tablets and many other mathematical devices to improve their understanding of the subject.
To help pupils to improve in the subject our consult would partner with the school to establish a clinic in the school. The clinic would be equipped with computers and earphones, and a large flat screen television to serve the teacher, tablets for students and projectors. All the computers will be loaded with software that treats all topics in the mathematics curriculum for secondary schools as well as past questions for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), IGCSE and UTME; these comes with audio-visual demonstrations.
The clinic consists of animations, videos, graphic and text resources. The interest of students in Mathematics is being stimulated using the audio visual approach which is totally different from the traditional approach that they are used too. It provides enhanced and augmented learning experience for pupils. This is further boosted with each student getting the opportunity to learn at his or her pace. It makes explanations for otherwise abstract mathematical concepts better delivered to the delight of the students. It has boosted the learning experience and performance of students as far as mathematics is concerned from our previous experiences with other schools.
The clinic will be opened to simplify the story of mathematics, and the ICT tools are learner-friendly. Given the importance of the subject to tertiary education, the centre justifies the school’s attempt to develop multiple intelligence in its pupils. In the past, the impression was that if you want to go for law you don’t need Mathematics so with that the students start avoiding Mathematics. But today, there is no subject you want to go for in the university that you don’t require a credit in Mathematics. So, we have to encourage them to make sure they do their best in mathematics and English.
SETTING UP A MATHEMATICS CLINIC:
The school will build the clinic within the school compound or creates a convenient space which can occupy at least 20 computers and other gadgets for the clinic. Our duty is to supply the necessary software and also provide qualified teachers that are specialized in organizing such clinics. This is important because the fear of mathematics by students is as a result of poor foundation caused by nit being taught properly over a long period of time by unqualified teachers.
In the clinic the pupils can do different things at the same time depending on their topic of interest. That is why they had personal computers in front of them. We have general classes too where we use the flat screen television set. We discovered that Mathematics is not simplified for students in most cases which make it easy for them to pull away from the subject but with the clinic it draws their attention and interest towards the subject. The maths clinic is designed in such a way that if a child goes through it, the child can score distinction in both internal and external examination no matter how complex the topic is.
MATHEMATICS LABORATORY
Mathematics as a subject is indispensable in the development of any nation with respect to science and technology since mathematics itself is the language of science. So at Academic Temple we also set up mathematics laboratory, this laboratory is a unique one room or place with relevant and up to date equipment known as instructional materials designated for teaching and learning mathematics. In order to prepare such laboratories below are the necessary equipment needed for the setting up the laboratory.
